Netherlands-based Royal FrieslandCampina said from 2013, all cardboard secondary packaging (packaging items like boxes, wrap arounds and trays) used by Royal FrieslandCampina Consumer Products Europe, Ingredients and Cheese, Butter & MilkPowder on the Western European market will be 100% sustainable.

FrieslandCampina CFO Kees Gielen said there's a lot gained by buying sustainably.

"The more sustainable we can be in our procurement, the more we can raise the level of sustainability among our business partners and the consumer," Gielen said.

The company's 80% of the cardboard used for secondary packaging presently is FSC-certified of which about 75% comes from recycled paper fiber and 25% from fresh fiber from managed forests.
